Central Area Employment Land Study, Tower Hamlets
BBP led a multi-disciplinary team including economists SQW and leading East End property agents, Strettons, to project Commercial and industrial land requirements for the Central Area of Tower Hamlets - comprising around half of the Borough. The aim of the commission was to ascertain the extent of land which should be protected for employment use against increasing pressures for residential development. The commission involved an assessment of the existing commercial and industrial property market, projections of job growth in the key sectors allowing for leakage to competing areas, and detailed assessments of the status and capacity of existing employment sites. Key to this assignment was the development of an understanding of the locational characteristics of existing industries and also the requirements of emerging employers. This was overlaid with survey and desktop analysis to develop a strategy for ensuring that adequate employment land was reserved and that residual sites which could leverage greater regeneration benefits through redevelopment were released. The project provided policy recommendations and an evidence base for the Councils Area Action Plan
