Chatham Maritime
Following a competitive tender, BBP was appointed to provide a full range of services including strategic development/masterplanning, marketing, project management, estate management and English Partnerships administrative functions, for Chatham Maritime, a flagship regeneration project in Kent. This project is a major regeneration initiative, involving the reclamation and development of 141 ha (350 acres) of former Naval dockyards. BBP was responsible for developing the planning policy context with Medway Council, preparing a development brief and monitoring the appointments nationally, and internationally. As a result of this process, a development consortium was selected whose proposals included a factory outlet centre, marina, cinemas, a range of pubs, and other visitor attractions. An essential part of the plans were to integrate with the Chatham Historic Dockyard to provide a powerful tourism draw for this part of the Thames Gateway and South East England. BBP’s role also included securing major on-site and off-site infrastructure improvements, with a new motorway link, setting up a number of public/private joint ventures, monitoring the performance of the development consortium and promoting the development of a new residential community of 1700 homes and 74,300 m² (800,000 ft²) offices, which now provide over 2000 jobs. BBP also created and implemented a ground-breaking exit strategy involving a Charitable Trust, which was vested with a dowry for ongoing maintenance.
