Shoreham Port Development Strategy
BBP was appointed by SEEDA to devise a development and implementation strategy for Shoreham Port. The Port’s activities had been dispersed over a large area along the sea front between Hove and Shoreham, which was not only unsightly, but operationally inefficient. Previous masterplanning studies had promoted a consolidation of the Port, a new access road and the release of development sites for housing and employment uses. Potentially, the area could offer one of the most significant brownfield development sites in the South of England, with scope for several thousand new homes and many new jobs in a high quality waterfront setting. At the time of BBP’s appointment however, little progress had been made in implementing the masterplan proposals. BBP was tasked to undertake a rigorous appraisal of the project, challenging previous assumptions and devising a strategy for implementation. This required an assessment of the Port’s strategic benefits and future potential, a review of the consolidation arrangements and the need for reclamation, an assessment of the development potential and associated infrastructure requirements, policy issues and delivery structures. In addition to the Port, BBP liaised with the Chief Executive of SEEDA’s partner agencies, including West Sussex, Brighton & Hove and Adur Councils.
